A grandfather clock is a tall, freestanding, weight-driven pendulum clock with the pendulum held inside the tower or waist of the case. An English clockmaker, William Clement, is credited with the development of this form in 1670. Until the early 20th century, pendulum clocks were the world’s most accurate timekeeping technology. The original clocks chimed at the top and bottom of the hour. In the early 20th century, a quarter hour chime sequence was added. The inspiration for this rug was the cubism artwork and its use of geometric shapes and fragmented objects. Some of the unique characteristic parts of the grandfather clock, including the pendulum and hanging weights, were rearranged. A combination of overlapping shapes, contrasting values and outlining were used to provide interest. Biography Pam Manders has been happily surrounded by wool snippets for 13 years.
